Having graduated, not to long ago (June 2000), from University -- SFU -- and
having summer just around the corner, I have been saddened by that fact that
I no longer get summers off. So what I can I do to get my summers back?... maybe
I should become a teacher
The transition from the academic world to the working world was fairly easy. I consider
what I'm doing -- software engineering -- to be pretty simple anyways. Not to mention that while I was in
school (full time) I was working about 25 hours per week at a warehouse (doing manual labour),... and full
time [although a 4 day work week] during Christmas vaction and summers. So comparatively, software
engineering is easy compared to real work.
My motivation for thinking about becoming a teacher has to do with quality of
life.... My quality of life. Summers have always been important to me. It is
the time that I can relax and do whatever I want. Being now faced with only 2 weeks
vacation, has distressed to me.
The one occupation, that I know of, that has summers off is teaching. Currently,
only having a BSc (with a Major in Comp Sci) I cannot go and teach at a University
or College. But am limited in choice (to lower levels); not that I have a problem with
teaching in a High School. ....So, Secordary School (High School) seems like the place
to go.
It shouldn't even take me very long to get the extra education that I need. I
already have far more than is required to teach Comp Sci in High School. I
would only need maybe 3 extra courses to be able to teach Math in High School.
And from what I understand, it wouldn't take too long to pick up the courses I
need to teach PE (Physical Educations, Gym) in High School. So all in all (with
the extra education classes that I'd need) I'd guess that it would take
me about a year.
I should mention that I was a tutor for quite a while (both privately and working
for a local College)... while I was in school. [I (mainly) taught 6th grade to
2nd year Math; and other stuff, like Physics or Chemistry, when asked.] And I enjoyed
tutoring. So this -- teaching -- would be something that I would like doing.
(Not to mention that I would not be as restricted in what I can do on my own
time. Due to non-competative clauses in my contract.)
So it is something for me to think about. I was planning to go back to school
anyways -- for my Masters -- but I guess I might be going back sooner than I
thought (... I planned to work for at least 2 years before going for my Masters).
I think I'll go talk to some of the academic advisors, at the University I went to,
to find out exactly how long it would take me; and then see if I can get my
warehouse-job back to support myself while in school. (I haven't seen any part-time
Computer jobs around here... in BC, Canada.)
Anyways, this is my diary entry (here at Kuro5hin). (My first actually.) I
don't know if anyone really reads these things (here at Kuro5hin), but if anyone
has any comments or advise, I'd love to hear it.
